Coraline Review

Being a fan of Tim Burton, Coraline was definitely ranked high on my list of must watch movies. It is an animation but some kids might feel fear as it is ultimately a horror movie rated PG. So please, parents, I urge you to do some background reading before bringing your younger kids to the big screens. Based on a book written by Neil Gaiman, Henry Selick, the director made this whole story come to life.

It is full of dark moments, figuratively and literally, and a successful one at it. However, if your children are older, then you and your children are going to enter a world of fantasy and I assure you that it is worth it. Coraline enters a world through a backdoor filled with spider webs and dust and it’s like alternative reality! She meets her other parent who gives her all she wants in that world but wants something in return while in the real world, she is neglected due to the hectic lifestyles of her parents and also the strict rules set as she is what I would call a typical latch-key kid. All these point to the bottomline of the story be careful what you wish for as it means life is usually an uphill climb of learning curves and you would not immediately get everything you want in life.

The predecessor, A Nightmare before Christmas, is a great movie but Coraline is totally good too in a parallel way. If you want to teach your child fear and how great and endearing love is at a tender age, then feel free to bring them into the cinemas, and catch this movie. Because all of us know that in today’s world, we have to give all we can at work, so that we can support our children and pay for their education and all. That is love to us, the best kind in fact. Unfortunately for our children, all they see is pain and neglect, thinking that we do not care enough for them and what they do in life.

This house called Pink Palace in Coraline saw a few local kids getting lost in that trapdoor towards the Other World, including Wybie’s grandmother’s sister. I love the character of Wybie including the one in the parallel world who has buttons for eyes and sewn up lips so that he could not talk as Coraline do not like his talkativeness and she gets what she wants in this world.

So do catch it. I am sure there’s the 3D version but trust me, I could never get tired of saying it. Watch it in 3D! It is one of the best 3D animations to date, in my opinion. I am careful what I’m saying! Hidden meanings and metaphors included.
