Mas Selamat Capture (The Real Deal)
Everyone’s talking about it. Why wasn’t it announced when Mas Selamat was captured. Did the Singapore government know anything about it?
When Datuk Seri Najip told PM Lee of the capture during an impromptu meeting, the latter mentioned that he already heard of the news from Wong Kan Seng, whom I assume got the information from the Internal Security Department (ISD). According to the report it was only until the press got the “leaked” information and tried verifying with the ISD that PM Lee decided to make the capture publicly known.
The report also stated explicitly that it was the ISD who gave information on Mas Selamat’s hideout, probably indirectly hinting that credit goes to Singapore and not Malaysia?
Straits Times, PM Lee’s Quote
I knew that ISD had been working hard on the case, and had found some leads which they had given to the Malaysian authorities.
Another quote from a Malaysian Newspaper
“I want to congratulate them for the arrest of a person who is a threat to the country. The police had mounted an effective operation that led to the arrest of the wanted man,” he said.
Asked if the fugitive was planning any attack in Malaysia, Najib said, “No, but we know he was planning a lot of things in Singapore.”
He said Malaysia was yet to decide if Mas Selamat would be sent back to Singapore.
Strangely enough, nothing about Singapore’s helpful ISD providing information to Malaysian authorities. In addtion is there a hidden meaning in the last statement? Malaysia may threaten not to hand over Mas Selamat to Singapore? I wonder than if PM Lee would be gutsy enough (like his Dad telling USA off during the Michael Fay incident) to demand Mas Selamat to be brought back?
Note though that there’s some very sensitive issues here. Malaysia being a muslim country may have their own opinions on how Mas Selamat should be punished. Afterall the Jemaah Islamiah is a muslim organisation.
Here’s a very insightful article that I’d like to share. In short, very doubtful questions about Mas Selamat capture was being broght up.
Minister Wong Kan Seng’s speech on 15th April 2009 (2 weeks after Mas Selamat was supposedly captured), he mentioned that the hunt for the danger man was still on-going and emphasized the important of this. the ISD should not relax until Mas Selamat was captured.
So was he freigning in front of everyone , or he was still in the dark like everyone else. Well if its reason no. 1, then I think Wong Kan Seng can join Mediacorp on a part time basis. If its reason no. 2, then it shows PM Lee sure doesn’t like to “lose face” in front of our Malaysian counterparts.
From another article on Straits Times the first line read:
DEPUTY Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng was overcome with emotion on Friday when he recounted how his friends congratulated him after they read newspaper reports about Mas Selamat being captured in Malaysia.
If he knew about the matter, shoudn’t he be more calm? Again, another nomination for Mediacorp’s Star Awards? Maybe both officials can fight it out for the best Male Actor Award?
With so many conflicting incidents, one will seriously start to think about the Singapore government. Why are there so many twisted statements? If you really sit down and recap of what’s been happening, nothing much makes sense.
Ultimately is the local media more resourceful then Singapore’s ISD?
