Mediacorp Star Awards 2009
With Star Awards 2009 coming to a close, and I’m sure many viewers are quite surprised about the results. Namely about Fiona Xie not coming into the Top 10 Actress list, and Jeanette Aw not winning the Best Actress Award, Joanne Peh snatching the award from right under her nose.
There was almost nothing about Fiona Xie throughout the award ceremony. Could it be that she’s going to be in the “long forgotten list”? A young and rising star appearing in tv series, talk-shows, and landing sponsorship deals. One cannot help wonder why wasn’t she voted in.
The whole Singapore probably thought Jeanette Aw would win the Best Actress for her role in Little Nonya. I’m sure even Jeanette herself thought that the Star Award night would be hers. Could this be a new Zoe-Fann rivalry in the making? Could it be that Mediacorp wants to retain Joanne Peh, hence giving the award to her instead of Jeanette Aw?
I thought it was very fair for Chen Han Wei to win the Best Actor Award for his role in “By My Side”. Though I didn’t catch the entire series, but based on the episodes I watched, Han Wei portrayed the role of a HIV victim very well. I think he really showed how someone with HIV would go through in life, the difficulties encountered, etc.
To be honest, I thought neither Joanne Peh, or Jeanette Aw deserved the Best Actress Award. In the entire TV Series “Little Nonya” Huang Hui to me was the best actress and really really seeped into the role, sadly though she wasn’t the main star. But I think its a very fair decision for her winning the Best Supporting Actress.
Little Nonya bagging a number of awards was probably expected by everyone. With so much effort into publicity, filiming budget, and what I call “after-sales marketing” (Little Nonya Musical, TV Series DVD, etc) its not surprising that the popular series won Best Drama Series Award. On-top of that, Little Nonya also won Best Production Design, Best Screenplay, Best Theme Song, Top Rated Drama Serial, Best Editing, and Best Director Awards.
Joanne Peh (Best Actress), Xiang Yun and Huang Hui (Best Supporting Actress) both won the respective categories for their role in Little Nonya as well. In fact I think its the first time Star Awards had two winners in the same category.
With that, here’s my preferred winning list:
Dong Su Hua (Best Newscaster) – Yea!
I think in terms of looks, presentation, she’s probably the best there is. (I’m sure most guys will agree with me on this)
Little Nonya (Best Drama Series) – Duh~
Probably could be better, but no doubt the best Drama of the year
Lin Pei Fen (Best Info-Ed Programme Host) – Disappointed
I thought So Simple was a really informative show that brings the viewers back to reality. About the simple pleasure in life, and Pei Fen’s gentleness as a host really brought that essence out. Sighh..
Huang Hui (Best Supporting Actress) – Yea!
Thumbs up to her, and her performance in Little Nonya. I really loved how she portrayed the pitiful maid in the show, as well as the loyalty to Yue Niang.
Chen Han Wei (Best Actor) – Thumbs Up
Again I think he was totally devoted and sank into his role in By My Side
Ru Yan (Best Theme Song) – Another Thumbs Up
Agree its the best theme song in the list, and what better person to sing it than our very own Olivia Ong. Not many would know of Olivia for her Bossa Nova style, but after her performance of Ru Yan, I think she’s achieved another level of fame. On the side, would Corrine May be a better choice? Hmm..

Well, as long as Ou Xuan don’t win Best Actress, I am fine with anything.

haha ye, agreed.. I think she’s a little over-rated.. and so is Little Nonya.. Honestly, I wonder if she’s fuming inside her for not winning the best actress award.. haha..

Agreed, she just cant act! she has the same expression on whatever roles she plays.. sometimes i wonder if i was watching the replay.

ye, you talking about Jeanette right? I think her acting bit rigid also..
April 27th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Well.. personally I don’t like the way she (Jeanette) talks..(in real life or acting) … she sounds like a lian trying to speak perfect Chinese. I think she need to make her voice slightly more rounder …
Over rated?? I agree …. See also see until Sian~ Newspaper, advertisement, musical, drama…. (Whole mediacorp only one actress ar??)
Pornsak called her Ah Jie …. Err… since when she become Ah Jie?? On what basis to promote her to Ah Jie? We only recogize two .. Zoe and Fann…. the rest… wait and see first.. don’t later… popular 1 year…. next year gone… like that also call Ah Jie ar?? like that … mediacorp got many many ah Jie lor…
another block head i don’t like… that Dai Yang Tian… what so handsome about him? Aiyoh… when he talks… his lips like sucking pacifier…

haha ye, agree with you Shrimp.. when she speaks her mouth like doesn’t seem to open.. somehow its as if her teeth are locked together when she speaks.. probably deliberately done as well..
But honestly, seems like Mediacorp trying to groom up Jeanette and Joanne. Ultimately its within the power of Mediacorp, whoever they choose to promote as Ah Jie. After all, the control the media in Singapore.

i don’t like the way Jeanette talk too. and during the Top10 female, she’s e last one to be called out, and she assume that Zoe did it purposely, and she went hahaha, which is kind of fake. no respect to the seniors.

I am not a big fan of Jeannette,I guessed she deserved to win the award as acting 2 characters is bad enough not to win an award but losing to Joanne Peh who is in the show halfway thru.I will rather she lost to other actress than having Joanne Peh taking the award from her.

Hi nina,
ye agree. That’s why I said (joanne literally snatched the award right under Jeanatte’s nose) Honestly, I think anyone would be puffing inside.

Give Joanne some credit for her role in ‘Little Nonya’ as she had to go through the fear of catching crawlers and also act in not 1 but 2 rape scenes … But if i got a chance to choose the best actress i will choose Huang Hui … She acted very well in the drama …

Personally I feel… Jeanette’s character (Ju xiang & Yue Niang) is a well like character in the show… But … Joanne’s character….. is really the killer one… The level of difficulty differs as well… It is easier to stand there pretty pretty and cook .. then to lie there dirty dirty and eat cockroaches ! Her acting skills are without a doubt… She broke through her usual role… (sorry to say this .. but give Jeanette another 20 more characters…. she will still be the same… just like what #jessica said… REPLAY…. nothing bad… nothing special…. nothing new…. nothing to remember……

I agree with you Shrimp,
though, I think Jeanette has her own fan base as well. Though she has that ordinary girl-next-door look and style, but it makes her stand out among some viewers as well.

Totally agree, Huang Hui, was really good as her role as the maid. The expression, presentation, the way she talks and carries herself really brings out the character. Sadly though, her’s was a supporting role.
Hence still thumbs up to Mediacorp for giving 2 awards for the Best Supporting Actress category. I’d probably boycott Ch8 if Huang Hui didn’t win.

Very dissappointed with Star Awards 2009. Expected 2 Best Supporting Actress Award, but did not expect them to go to co-performers from the same drama. Why wasn’t Cai Peixuan selected? Because she’s Malaysian? Remember Christopher Lee lost to Ix Shen because he was not a Singaporean? Awards should be given based on merit, not on nationality.

hmm but still, Mediacorp has groomed Christopher Lee as their biggest star, definitely much more popular than Ix Shen..
