Role of Mobile Phones Today
I was just sitting around having some thoughts about mobile phones and mobile technology. Looking at how much technology has evolved, from HUGE desktop PCs running in DOS, invention of handphones, and later the introduction of internet.
Then today, you can do almost everything with your mobile phone. Anything from making calls and sending smses, to taking high resolution photos, listening to your MP3s or radio, and web surfing. I was very intrigued about yesterday’s article in the Straits Times, when we are on the verge of using our mobile phones as a replacement of credit cards! Yep, all you have to do is to just place your mobile phone (embeded with a mircochip) on this sensor, and you’re done with the payment.
But back to the main point. Have you ever thought of the importance of mobile phones today. Back then it used to be the main communication tool. Being contactable wherever you are. Now, with high-speed 3G access, and WirelessSG everywhere, we can really surf the web anywhere anytime.
New PDA phones like HTC Touch, iPhone, Xperia, and many others have almost full browser capabilities that allows you to surf any complex website on that little device in your hand. Booking movie tickets, checking emails, and even blogging are now possible while you’re on-the-go. In the near future, we may be looking at paying bills, checking your internet bank account, and even filing your taxes with just a few touch of the buttons on your handphone. In fact all these features are already possible with today’s mobile technology.
So with someone being able to listen to music, take picture perfect photos, surf the web, (on top of making calls and smses which now seem like a secondary feature of a mobile phone) can someone name me a function that a mobile phone can’t do?
In the next few years, I think this is what technology would look like. Desktop users start to greatly reduce since laptops are just as powerful and more compact. With netbooks gaining popularity, and mobile phones becoming more high-tech, laptops will probably be just left at home, sitting on the table where the desktop PC used to be.
I mean, who would want to carry a laptop on-the-go, when you can do almost anything with your mobile phone?

That’s the importance I’m trying to tell everyone about mobile phones.
Mobile phones aren’t just a communication tool now, its about infinite accessibility within that small device you hold in your hands
