The Proposal Movie Review
If you are looking forward to a relaxing weekend with a romantic comedy to bring you some smiles then The Proposal is the film to watch. Starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, this duo is sure to spark of some chemistry and at the same time, creates humour for your soul to be appeased – seventh month entertainment not included.
The brilliant acting of the lead actors and actresses aside, throw in some true office humour and gorgeous sceneries, you can truly forget about the tonnes of clichés in the film. Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) plays a strict and demanding boss who oozes authority right from the start. Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) plays her younger assistant, decent and obedient. Both of them works in a publishing firm and in my opinion, the both of them does not let us down.
And so, the plot moves on to slowly flow into a romantic comedy where Margaret as an Editor has to marry someone in the country so as to save herself from getting deported back to Canada. The easy way out, you may ask? It is to marry her assistant, Andrew. Margaret has to blackmail him into marrying her and so, promises him a promotion and to get his work published. In addition, she has to go on bended knee in public and begs him to marry her. In front of her bosses though, she has to make a trip down to Alaska the following weekend to attend his Grandma’s birthday and to make the marriage official.
Off to Alaska they went, half flew and half by land. Finally, they reached Sitka. They experienced various emotions and even met Andrew’s previous girlfriend who was very pretty. They were torn apart because Andrew wants to head to New York to fulfill his dreams while she only wants to stay in her comfort zone, the place where she will always call home. The fact that Andrew stays in a house on an island means that the only transport there is by sea! Margaret cannot swim and so most of the hilarious and heartwarming scenes are here.
Will this faux engagement magically turns real?
I shall not spoil it for you all. But for a film by Anne Fletcher, with success stories including Step Up and 27 Dresses, The Proposal is something to behold. The entire cast is talented and the charisma and chemistry coming from Bullock and Reynolds is overwhelming. Bullock looks her age and marriage is definitely in her books for her character in the film.
And if wedding bells are your kind of film and event, then do look out for her bachelorette party with a stripper who is also a pastor and everything else you can think of. Maybe because Andrew’s family is rich and they like him or the population there is really very small.
For a movie that I would normally call a chick flick, this has gone beyond my standards and more. So, lastly, let me tell you my favourite line in the movie – Show Her Who’s Boss!
